I grew up in really small town in southern Missouri, but I decided to move somewhere else. I went to Portland and Atlanta and Chicago and New York (and for a very little while -- Russia... Я не говорю по-русски).
 
I really like making things. Well, making things simple. Concepts matter a lot. So does story-telling. Those are really the only things you need for good design. As Vignelli says, "If you can design one thing, you can design anything." I think he's right (and he always returns e-mails).
